Hey guys! I am looking for some advice as I am starting a new regiment for the new year. I have always been in good shape my whole life and the past few years at college I have stayed at about the same weight but I dont think I am as tones as I used to be. I guess you could call this a new years resolution, but I think It's just me getting back on track. I'll be pretty straight forward.

I'm a few inches over 6 foot and about 160. I normally eat pretty healthy but I have always taken in a lot of calories and never been able to put on a significant amount of muscle mass. I have done a decent amount of research on the subject but I was hoping maybe some of you guys had some first hand tips. Other than laying off on the many beers on the weekends, any workout routines, supplements, or meal tips you guys have? Looking to especially work on the chest/pectoral area as well as abdominal as they are lacking compared to arms, shoulders, and legs.

Haha you sound exactly like me but a few years older I'm very tall and find it easy to stay in shape. I keep getting started on weights but get bored easily and do something else with the time after 2 weeks which is actually bad for you. But I mean it bores the crap out of me when I could be playing sc2. But my hockey will improve from it so I know I have to do it. It will also help with how I am about to grow based on my relatives my shoulders should start to grow quite fast if I start weights. Guess this is my que to start again best of luck with yours!

Like you would for sports stretch before you do it. My first week I didnt stretch my arms at all and as soon as I did my muscles felt much better and it was easier to start the next day.

Thats about all I can give you and im sure in your research or through using common sense you probably worked that out. I remember when I first got my weights set I had alot of people urging me to look up a few books to make sure I had a good knowledge about weightlifting and how to use it with your body.

The only person I know of on the armory that has done workout routines is Greenmachine. I remember him posting some videos a little while ago so maybe he can give you some insight. Edit: Speak of the devil, i've been ninja'd

Thats the first 10 minutes of one of the P90x videos. Its a good example of how it is!!

Some people might not like doing a workout watching a video, but if you don't mind you will enjoy this.

Oh and this is the warmup ^^

I work out 5 days a week. I'm about 6'1 and used to weighed around 150lbs, now I am at 185. My goal is to hit 200. This is basically what I do, if you are looking to put on weight/define yourself.

- Eat whatever you please as you should be doing around 2000-3000 calories a day
- Only eat 3 times a day as to slow down your metabolism, do not eat in between
- Do cardio at minimum 1-2 days a week, to help burn off excess fat
- Do heavy weight, low reps (I do 4 sets of 5 reps per workout with super heavy weights)
- Do a different body type per day, this is my schedule:

Mon: Bicep/Tricep/Forearm/Stomach
Tues: Cardio/Thighs/Calves/Stomach
Wed: Shoulders/Back/Stomach
Thurs: Chest/Core/Stomach
Fri: Cardio/Running

- Drink a protein shake (with high calorie count and protein per serving) within 30 minutes after workout
- Can also drink orange juice or similar drinks to help repair your body
- Drink lots of water
- Cut out sodas/candy to very minimal
- Stretch before workouts

I only do about 45-60 minutes a day and within 6 months I saw results, you just have to stick with it. I have also done P90X, which is good, but its not so much about putting weight on as it is for toning/losing weight.

If you have any questions, be sure to ask.

If you're going to use a protein shake I recommend putting some dextrose in it, and having it within 30 minutes (like gears said) after workout, what that does is the sugar allows all the protein to be utilized alot faster, and it will vastly improve your strength AND muscle mass gain. Stomach can be worked every day as it's a huge and resilient muscle (in fact if you really want a ripped six pack you should work out out every day, don't even need to use a machine just do crunches [NOT SIT UPS])

Gears is correct about splitting up the muscle groups and doing them each only once a week + doing high weight reps, by not endlessly working them every day or every other day you let them rest, and if you really push yourself and do a heavy weight it forces the muscle to break down and reform much stronger. The only thing is if you're going to do this method you need to be pushing yourself to the limit to see good results, you can't just do a weight that burns a little bit, it has to make your arms really ache (not pulling a muscle or injury, just heavy burning) after each set.

When your workout is done, if you find your muscles are hurting to much after workouts (like days after) you may need to have more protein sooner after your workout. Most of the top bodybuilders will say diet is at least 50% the cause for good muscle mass building, it's true -- best not to eat to much junk food as it will only slow down your progress.

K this is coming from a guy whose at 6`4 and built like a linemen so it may not work
But I run like crazy everyday after school in the school going up and down every set of stairs in the school for a lap. In my highschool a lap of that is about a 4th of a mile so I run with the other kids about 8 of those laps and it works your legs and stomach really well. After the run we do abs and do about 10 different types of pusheups and planks which work the arms abs and legs.

You don't really need a workout machine to get in shape

I work out, but I'm not trying to get buff or anything. I start out with a run and then I focus on one part of the body for a day.

Gotta get rid of this Freshman 15 from last year -___-

I workout in the time I have in between class so nothing hardcore.

Mon/Wed/Fri: Biceps, Triceps, Pecs
Tues/Thus: Legs stuff

I also have no restraints on food, but I eat relatively healthy anyways. And I have a pretty fast metabolism so I don't have to watch my weight/couldn't gain weight.

What kind of gym is available to you? It would help to know what kind of equipment you have available. For instance my school has a floor with about 30-40 machines in a room that cover every muscle group it seems like. On the weekends I do upper body one day and lower body another, with long weekends spent on all ab stuff. It's been about a month and I already got more muscle than I've ever had in my life. I'm 5'10" and have been around 150 since high school, now im almost 170 >=)
