So I have been thinking about how to re-structure the forum posts lately, and the following suggestion will surprise some users. Before I attempt to implement this idea, I would like your guys opinion on the strategy.

First off, all forum posts will support an up/down rating system. Yes, yes, I know, I have been against this for a long time. But as it currently stands, I would like to try more user/community based moderation instead of relying on 3 of us to moderate everything. Poorly rated posts will bury them (similar to the enemy system) and move to the bottom, and highly rated posts will move to the top; more information on this below. This will allow users to gradually downvote all the troll/spam/flame posts. However, the report system will still be in place and will be used as an instant way to alert a moderator to force delete a post. The rating system will also determine what order the posts are displayed in; highly rated will appear first, while poorly rated will appear at the bottom. Posts will no longer be display in chronological order (except by default).

Secondly, posts can be nested within other posts, ala threaded posts. This will work similar to Reddits comment system where you can reply to a post, instead of replying to the thread and quoting a previous post (you can still quote normally). This will allow better grouping of posts and related/quoted posts.

All in all, its extremely similar to Reddits comment system. Thoughts, opinions, suggestions would be awesome.

I think this up/down rating system should be something you can do after you reach a certain amount of posts.
I like the posts nested within other posts idea.

Its interesting, I'm not sure about it though.

It seems like all of this could be fixed though if you just gave me SuperMod powers with the ability to temp ban for 2 days.

The problem with your system as it is now is that no one cares what happens to them, your mods have no actual power. The best thing that they can actually do it PM you that someone needs to be ban because they were posting porn or something on your site.

I think instead of coding more, that this whole thing would be better solved if you actually let your mods do what their job entitles.

This is more of a facelift compared to a moderating suggestion. Old school forums are pretty out dated now a days, was trying to think of something new.

As for temp-bans, its coming.

i agree with Uberman. even if its a temp ban, or insane restriction like 1 post and topic a day for a week. that way they can be taken out of the equation faster and be dealt with easier.

best way to run anything is to get everyone else to do most of the tedious work.

ahhhh i get you now. your making the armory look pretty. it would work pretty well as long as there are no errors that present themselfs.....

and im dyeing to see the new armory logo! considering how awesome the D3A's logo is (i know its the same as the old one but sitll its awesome).

I like it, but I kinda have to agree with Uberman, no Mods on this site can actually do much. I understand if you're leery about giving other people (even just a select few) power over your website because of the unknown reprecussions it might involve.

But to just give everyone the ability to "like"/"dislike" a particular post seems like a round-a-bout way of just taking a problem and pushing it under the rug. While if you gave a select few in good standing among the community a more authoritative power (Even if it's only a temp. ban that flags you a message) would result in a much swifter, less troll/flame/spam induced system.

Becuase even if a persons post was "down voted" to being buried, what's stopping them from copy n' paste and adding some more fuel? It might get downvoted quickly again but it's still just hiding the problem, not really fixing it.

There's my two cents, along with a grain of salt.

I definitely like this idea. I've loved the Redditt forums style ever since I saw it.

This will definitely help, but not to the extent you may be looking, just as my dear colleagues Uberman and Anarchy have stated.

This sounds like a great idea for the site, but I worry that good posts will get screwed over not because of its content, but because of its poster.

It will be up to the community to see if they're going to act their age or attempt to bury posts because they don't like the person making it.

Off Topic: I'm finding your war with that dumbass troll in that other thread hilarious Miles

I like the idea, but i got a question.
So the post will be moving around based on rating?
This makes it hard to follow a conversation...

Yeah this is my largest concern right now. If anything, order will just stay chronological but with the newer features.

The thing is though if people want to engage in a conversation, they will use the "reply to specific user" option, and then people will just keep going down that like a step ladder.

Well isn't that the point? Its like a replacement for quoting, because now you can just reply to the post. There will be a max depth, but to be determined.

I don't really care about the up/down vote thing. Do what you want on that one. However, I'm not a fan of the structure you are suggesting. I find it often confusing and cluttered, especially when you are attempting to address several things at once. Chronological order has always been my favorite and seemingly neatest method of organization.
