Chapter 7

- The Crucible -

I

"You okay miss Miranda?" A bald man with straw brows asked the dazed woman. "No?" He shook his head and raised his brows as if waiting for an answer.

Miranda simple stared back at the bulky bald man while she slumped on the metal wall behind her.

"I'm Lieutenant Chuck Palmer, Special Ops and Tactical Strike Division of the Guild's army. I've heard a great deal about you Vanguard top-cats." He reached out and initiated a hand shake but was only met by awkward silence. He quickly withdrew his hand. "Miss Clara told me to fetch you."

Miranda held tightly to a bar on her left as everything shook.

"Just a little turbulence. Nothing to be afraid of," Chuck answered. He walked away from Miranda and looked out a window. "If it would please you to see, the rebels are being hammered by the Guild's fleets." Chuck looked at Miranda and smiled, before pointing to the window on Miranda's left.

Miranda stared apprehensively at Chuck, who nodded encouragingly. She turned to look outside and saw flashing red lights blasting the scattered rebel ships. "Indeed."

"Indeed?" Chuck asked, his left golden eyebrow shooting up. "Are they being hammered, really?"

"I'm sorry? I don't quite--"

"Forgive me, General Miranda," Chuck apologized. "Miss Clara told me she would not be joining us to Niflheim. Is it true?"

Miranda did not answer. She merely continued to look at the storm of laser blasts outside the craft they were in.

"I guess I'll take that as a yes." Chuck assumed. "I--"

A startling buzz rang throughout the room. A door slid open and revealed a dark hall. Miranda craned her neck to see who was outside.

"Later," Chuck muttered. Miranda saw nothing but faint purplish glows that dissolved almost instantly into the darkness.

Chuck seems to have detected the anxiety in Miranda's face for he was quick to say, "I'll explain later. For now, we have an important announcement to hear."

Chuck approached a control panel and tinkered with some buttons and levers. A holographic screen burst to life in the middle of the room. It showed a bust of a man.

It momentarily faded into static but soon reformed once again into the bust Miranda saw earlier. It took her a few seconds to realize she was staring at Blake.

Citizens of New Augustgrad, fear no longer! The rebels are no more! As your humble servant and Secretary of Defense, I assure you, that as we speak, the rebels are either being killed or being rounded up! Our capitol is free once again, just as it should be.

Chuck surveyed Miranda's expressions. The woman was like a turbulent ocean of emotions. Chuck decided to withhold his questions and continue to listen to the transmission instead.

...while I do claim victory on the Augustgrad skies, the same could not be same for our beloved Guild. Our dear Grand Secretary Timothy House has disappeared for reasons unknown during the heat of the crisis.

Under normal circumstances, this would have been grave and saddening, but given the severity of the threat we are facing right now, not just from the rebels, but also from the recently awaking zerg broods and reports of surviving protoss warriors, we can not linger on mourning and wallow in self-pity. As Secretary of Defense, I am forced by my duty to the people, to act as the temporary Head of the Guild until this state of disorder is finished.

It will be a long and tiring battle, but--

Chuck ended the transmission.

"Blake..." Miranda muttered. "Blake is one of them. Blake is allied with those rebels."

"You mean was allied."

"No. Blake has been their insider from the start. He could not...unless.." Miranda's voice trailed off into silent thoughts.

"Unless he has betrayed the rebels and wanted the Guild for himself," Chuck answered.

-------------------------

"Yes Sebastian, I got it. Now go!" Blake shooed his assistant away. "Sanchez!"

"You called, secretary?"

"Of course I did! Where's the private room I asked for?" Blake demanded, his cheeks red with anger and his brows lost up his temples.

"Right this way sir," Sanchez motioned.

"Good! Now leave!"

Sanchez nodded curtly and scuttled off. Blake waited until the entire area was clear before he opened the door and stepped in.

The sound of a pair of hands applauding met Blake's jumping ears. From the dark, a voice spoke. "Congratulations. Finally, you did it!"

Blake turned on the lights and sneered. "I told you I won't fail, Martin."

Blake and Martin those sneaky bastards ^^ I'm proud to say that I never liked them! What I really can't wait to see, however, is how the Voice in the Dark fits into all of this.

I thought something was up. Good to see an update here.

That's a satisfyingly good addition. It's actually quite nice that half into the last book we are still yet to see more characters, especially that 'glow' Miranda saw. I'm guessing it is related to the Visages.
